Santan: Philippines AirAsia’s newest hot meals on board!

Just tried Philippines AirAsia’s newest hot meals and it’s…

“Awesome!” — This just sums up my foodie experience!

During our recent trip to Hong Kong which was provided for by AirAsia and Vikings during its launch of the Dine and Fly raffle promo, we had the opportunity to immerse in Santan, AirAsia’s inspiration for its new meals on board. Let me orient you first that, from this point, everything about our Hong Kong tour will talk food. Lots of them!

Philippines AirAsia New Hotmeals

To start if off, here is what happened. We took a bite into the latest hot-meals offered by Philippines AirAsia.

Spicy Beef Bulgogi

Fresh items on-board include bangus sisig, a Filipino dish made of chunks of boneless milkfish sautéed in onions seasoned with salt, pepper and spices. Its buffalo chicken strips and barbeque cola beef are yummier versions of grilled meat on smoky sauce and paired with roasted potatoes or tomato rice. Those on a diet won’t have to worry as Philippines AirAsia has its new vegetarian chickpea curry or the classic Maan’s pasta arabiata. This December, Philippines AirAsia has started making these available for on-board and pre-book purchase.

On our flight to Hong Kong, I was able to indulge in their Korean japchae, barbeque cola beef with tomato Rice, grilled chicken in pesto sandwich, and lemon torte for dessert. And here’s what I think about each.

Korean Japchae

I’m a huge fan of Korean japchae and the one they served in-flight is just so good! Perfectly cooked with the finest vermicelli noodles sautéed with vegetables, beef strips and drizzled with the right amount of sesame oil.

Barbeque Cola Beef

Their barbeque cola beef with tomato rice is also a must-try! This meal with tender beef is cooked with cola infused barbeque sauce and is guaranteed to thrill your taste buds. The dish is complemented with tangy tomato rice for an undeniably delicious all-day meal.

For dessert, I enjoyed their version of lemon torte. It’s not too sweet and the creamy frosting made me want to get some more.

During our flight back to Manila, I checked out their bangus sisig, buffalo chicken strips with roasted potatoes, and banoffee cake for dessert.

Bangus Sisig

Their bangus sisig is a delicious concoction of friend minced milkfish, fresh vegetables, toasted garlic and filipino seasonings cooked to perfection. This dish is low in fat and cholesterol compared to its pork counterpart. And best of all, this dish taste heavenly!

Buffalo Chicken Strips

The buffalo chicken strips dish is spiced with Texan barbeque and paired with delicious herb-infused roasted potatoes. This is definitely a dish that will satisfy your barbeque cravings onboard.

Of course, they still serve my all-time favorite, nasi lemak. Pak Nasser’s nasi lemak pairs rice cooked in coconut cream with spicy chili sambal (chili paste). The condiments that accompany Nasi Lemak add more to the excitement of the senses. The fried anchovies provide that crunch and salty taste, while the toasted peanuts give texture. The hard-boiled egg lends a gelatinous and creamy bite, while the delicious chicken rendang rounds up the meal with its spicy goodness.

All hot-meals and sandwiches served are certified Halal.

For cold drinks, Philippines AirAsia offers Yellow Tail Merlot and Chardonnay wine, Badoit sparkling water, some mineral water, Dole four seasons juice drink, Del Monte pineapple juice drink, San Miguel Light and Pale pilsen, Coca-Cola regular, Coke Zero, Sprite, Pocari Sweat, Ceres apple juice, Ceres Secrets of the Valley, and Cowhead premium chocolate drink.

They also offer hot beverages such as coffee and tea selections from Tea Traders and Coffee Roasters. Tea lovers can enjoy Teh Tarik, English breakfast, green tea and peppermint tea. Meanwhile, coffee lovers can have a delightfully bold brewed coffee in infusion bags. They also offer Big J’s hot chocolate.

Some other ASEAN dishes served include chicken rice, beef caldereta and adobo. As I mentioned earlier, the menu’s concept revolves around the term Santan which is a vital liquid ingredient used in Malay cooking that is obtained from pressing shredded coconut meat. It’s thick, creamy, and often used as an alternative for utter, cream or soup stock in ASEAN cuisine.

Beside its new hot meals, desserts are also made available. Apart from lemon torte and banoffee cake, they also have sinful chocolate cake and chocolate chip cookies which are priced from P80 on-board and discounted upon pre-booking.

Talking about discounts, all AirAsia guests can save up to 20% on food if they pre-book their meals rather than purchase their meals on board. Be assured, though, that your preferred meals will still be available during flight.
