Restaurant Review: Canvas Bistro Bar & Gallery
Wondering where that good breakfast place with an artistic finish at Ayala Terraces went? Look no further. The King of Sinulog is off for an early wake-up call on a Friday to have a taste at Canvas Bistro Bar & Gallery. Now located at One Paseo Saturnino along Maria Luisa Road in Banilad, this establishment just recently opened its doors to customers last November 20, 2015 and we are one of the lucky few to try first-hand their revamped and talked about breakfast menu. Read on as I describe to you every single bite for you to know why this establishment is worth a visit.
Located in a classy neighborhood filled with food and lifestyle choices, Canvas with its brushed artistic insignia, see through glass walls and spacious interior clearly stands out. Upon entering, you’ll notice its unfinished yet elegant feel with palette colors of black, gray and brown on its fixtures and decor.
What I love about this establishment is that it is a restaurant, wine bar and art gallery all in one. Every experience is interestingly refreshing and highly customized to their customers’ preference with its restaurant highlighting modern Australian cuisine with a fusion of Asian flavors proudly sourced from local produce and imported ingredients, a perfect combination to satisfy the discriminating Cebuano palate. Their wine selection is predominantly Australian but also comes with modern French and Spanish wine options.
What I admire most is their art gallery that features various artworks made by local artists which I believe is a great opportunity to showcase homegrown talents ensuring that every customer visit at Canvas is a holistic and artistic dining experience. At the moment, their featured artist is Lino Venzal from the town of Argao in Southern Cebu who specializes in sceneries and portraits. What really inspired me is the fact that Lino has amputated arms. Despite all odds, he still strived real hard to support his family through his art. You should check out the art display when you decide to dine at Canvas Bistro Bar & Gallery and probably purchase one that you fancy.
Breakfast at Canvas Bistro Bar & Gallery
As we were seated, we were immediately asked if we wanted coffee or any tropical drink with which we happily obliged. Their brewed coffee was served on a big white mug with fresh milk on the side. Their four season tropical cocktail was very citrusy and quite rejuvenating. Their watermelon shake was good.
After we settled down on our seats, we were able to browse at their breakfast menu. We got to try three entries with which we were told were popular bestsellers.
Though the food preparation took quite a while, the wait was indeed worth it. Seeing how beautifully the food was presented, the white plate was definitely the canvass and the food was the artwork.
The first entree was Poached Eggs with English Muffins, Emmental Cheese, Grilled Ham & Hollandaise Sauce at PHP295. This dish was flavorful especially if you try combining a little of everything on a single munch!
Next was Breakfast Beef Medallion with Saute Mushrooms, Hash Brown Potato, Fried Egg, Tomato, Bacon & Whole Wheat Bread at PHP365. I need to commend the hash brown potato’s premium taste and texture compared to those served at fast food retailers. With regards to the beef medallion, I much prefer the local beef to be a bit more tender the next time.
Last was Banana Buckwheat & Barley Pancake with Grilled Ham, Brie & Scrambled Egg at PHP295. At first glance, it looked really enticing with circular banana slices embedded on the pancake. They were without a doubt, banana pancakes with a creative twist!
Overall, with smart, knowledgeable, prompt and friendly service paired with quality food and reasonable pricing, I can totally say that the move to the new location was a positive step forward and I hope that the management would continue to host regular events and art exhibits and continue to introduce new menu offerings. Surely, Canvas Bistro Bar & Gallery will not only be a favorite breakfast place but an exciting dining destination for locals and tourists alike. Later!
